EBRD lights up Armenia’s capital
We are providing US$ 4 million for a pilot project that will enable Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, to modernise its street-lighting system by introducing energy-efficient technologies.

The EBRD is helping Moldova’s capital Chisinau to switch from conventional street lighting to low-energy LED lights. The investment is also supported by the European Investment Bank and the Taiwanese International Cooperation and Development Fund.

Few entrepreneurs can claim that they have contributed to building their own country. But the Rula brothers from Albania can. As founding owners of Europa Construction, which produces metal infrastructure used in tunnels, dams, sports arenas and industrial facilities, their work has become, quite literally, part of Albania’s landscape.

Gulmaira Akim owns one of the thousands of micro businesses in Mongolia that can improve their companies at zero foreign exchange risks with a loan in tugrik, the Mongolian currency.

Georgia
In 2015, we provided a €1.9 million loan to Georgian broadcast operator Stereo+, together with Georgia’s TBC Bank, to support the country’s switch from analogue to digital broadcasting. The European Union supports this transaction through a risk-sharing facility which underpins the establishment of Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with Georgia.

Ukraine
Ukraine is stepping up its efforts to combat corruption and improve its business environment. A central element of this campaign is the country’s Business Ombudsman Council. Launched in 2015, the Council is funded by the EBRD-Ukraine Stabilisation and Sustainable Growth Multi-Donor Account, which is supported by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Kosovo
Lirije Kajtazi, owner of Rolleo – a Kosovan producer of biscuits – is a woman with great vision. Thanks to tailored advice and finance from the EBRD, her company is benefiting from improved marketing tools and will soon open a new factory. This project is part of the EBRD’s Women in Business programme in Kosovo funded by Luxembourg and Sweden.

Kyrgyz Republic
With donor funding from the United States, we helped Kulikovskiy Tort, a confectionery manufacturer in Kyrgyzstan, grow and expand. The project helped to improve the quality of their cakes and pastries, introduce new product lines, and facilitate an in-depth study of potential markets. These efforts led to the opening of stores internationally as well as a significant rise in export sales.

The EBRD has helped a big brewery in the Kyrgyz Republic modernise its premises and install cutting-edge, climate-friendly technology, thanks to our Finance and Technology Transfer Centre for Climate Change (FINTECC) Programme, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
The EBRD, with the European Investment Bank and donor funds from the European Union, Canada, Italy, Japan and the US, is helping upgrade roads and railways in Bosnia and Herzegovina – to the benefit of businesses and country’s citizens, too.

With support from the European Union, we helped Karas, a nationwide food chain in Armenia, to work with an international adviser to introduce better human-resource processes, adopt international food standards and develop their business model.

Jordan
We are working with the Jordanian Microfund for Women to provide finance for women entrepreneurs and encourage more to become active in Jordan's growing economy. This project was funded by the SEMED Multi Donor Account. Donors are: Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taipei China and the United Kingdom.

FYR Macedonia
The EBRD is boosting the regional integration of energy markets in the Western Balkans with a loan of up to €37 million to Montenegrin electricity operator MEPSO to construct the first electricity interconnector between Albania and FYR Macedonia and improve the efficiency of the Macedonian grid.

In April 2015, Albania launched its Investment Council, an institution with the goal of enhancing public-private dialogue and spurring concrete action to strengthen the business climate.

Pakinam Moustafa is the founder and owner of Paky Art de Verre, one of the leading designers and manufacturers of decorative glass in Egypt. She has grown her local business and is now set to export. Her company introduced a computerised management information system, developed a marketing plan and kick-started e-commerce. Business advice was provided through the Women in Business programme funded by the EBRD, the European Union, the Middle East and North Africa Transition Fund and the SEMED Multi-Donor Account.

Domestic meat production in Montenegro has great potential on the local, regional and EU markets, yet it only accounts for 40 per cent of local consumption.

Morocco
Renewable energy generation in Morocco has received a boost with an investment by the EBRD and Banque Marocaine du Commerce Extérieur (BMCE) plus a concessional loan of €10 million from the Climate Investment Fund’s Clean Technology Fund (CTF). This funding will enable the construction, operation and maintenance of the Khalladi wind farm, near Tangiers.

The Aral Sea is disappearing. Fishing communities have moved and stranded ships now dot the wide Central Asian steppe like a mirage. So it is all the more important that water is used efficiently. Together with the European Union, the EBRD is working to improve and renovate water supply systems in cities across Kazakhstan.

The EBRD helped a Kazakh ventilation manufacturer improve production and start exporting its products. This advisory work in Kazakhstan is currently funded by the government of Kazakhstan as a core donor, and by the United States and BG Kazakhstan.
